He talks about the Overdose and what’s coming soon for subscribers, he gives credit advice likes some low-rent Suze Orman, and talks to tattoo artist Cory in Long Island about the show NY Ink, her BFF RoBear, and her denial about her fledgling relationship with her baby daddy. THere’s a lot of philosophy and rambling, and strap in because this is a long roller coaster of an emotional ride with a drunk man on the teetering brink of oblivion. Don’t take anything said in this show as real advice or real in anyway. Patrick is a complete lunatic. Enjoy the show!

I’m going to have to side with Cory on the “staying together for the kids” argument. There was an interesting study done not too long ago on this very question (link to write up: http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/features/dont-stay-together-for-the-kids-rowing-parents-told-1879980.html) and, to sum up, the researchers found that parents staying together for the sake of the children was harder on children than divorce if the parents were in continual conflict. Now, that is a big “if” and we have to take Cory at her word that she and her boyfriend can work out an amicable living arrangement free of conflict. Patrick is right that the child will eventually understand his parents are more friends than lovers, but I disagree that this will have a major impact on the child’s happiness or adjustment. His parents will love him and, assuming they can remain amicable with each other, how often they fuck or hold hands will have zero impact.

On the contrary my parents split up when I was 2 and were never married, and I have no memories of them being together, I always went back and forth between them and there was a lot of conflict and attrition, and I turned out great. I’m smart, focused, ambitious, I’m not lacking in any social or psychological areas, I’m not depraved of love or scarred or incapable of friendship, a little egotistical, self-centered and lazy, but that’s about it. I believe it depends on the parents and how methodically they raise their children.

To be fair, the conflict you described was not a daily, inescapable event. The study describes two “live-in” parents exposing their children to daily or near daily conflict. And I wasn’t trying to say that two “live-in” parents are the best or even preferred types. I was only pointing out some supporting research for Cory’s argument that there is at least one successful path to “staying together for the kids”.

On a side note, my personal experience is actually similar to yours and I also think I came out mostly ok. So that’s two votes for raising healthy kids by bouncing them back and forth between parents who hate each other.

Wait, hold on a second, “I’m going to have to side with Cory on the “staying together for the kids” argument.” I thought by saying this you were saying that it is a better idea to stay together for the kid(s)? But now you’re saying “it was not a daily inescapable event.” Well, I know I’d rather go between parents every week than have to deal with my parents arguing every day because they hate each other because they’re only staying together for me.

Patrick made a good point that Cory will eventually find existence in a loveless relationship to be unsatisfying but it’s certainly possible she could channel this romantic dissatisfaction into fervent child-rearing and make a wonderful soccer mom/helicopter parent. She will, of course, have to explain away her tattoos as relics of a misbegotten youth to the other soulless mothers as they chat vapidly over triple mocha lattes at her little angel’s play dates, but she could take some comfort in her new vicarious life as she drives her son to his five separate extracurricular activities and carefully cuts the crust off his organic peanut butter and sugar-free jelly sandwich. But, eventually, channeling all the shades of love she needs into one tiny frame will take its toll on the child and in his teen years he’ll rebel against his mother’s smothering attention, run away from home, and get a job at a tattoo parlor. The circle of life.
